Once a domain is registered, who is the legal owner of the domain?

For domains ending in .com, .net (ICANN controlled domains, the person who is the Registrant contact is the legal owner of that domain.

For .au domains, you technically do not "own" a domain, you purchase a license to use the domain.

For example; mybusiness.com.au is licensed to the registrant for the period of registration.
